1.Process Overview
In large-scale industrial printing, Offset and Gravure represent the pinnacle of efficiency and precision. Cold foiling in these environments is typically executed by applying a UV-curable adhesive in the first printing unit, followed by foil lamination. Spot varnish is then applied as the final stage to define the product's surface texture.
2.Offset Cold Foiling: Precision & Dot Gain
Dot Definition:Offset adhesives must exhibit minimal ink-spread to prevent excessive dot gain under high-pressure impression. This ensures crisp edges for intricate metallic patterns and fine typography.
Peeling Force Balance:On high-speed offset presses (exceeding 15,000 sph), the adhesive must maintain sufficient wet tack before curing and provide stable release force during de-foiling to avoid "foil flaking" or "pinholes
3.Gravure Spot Varnish: High Coating Weight & Resistance
Gravure is renowned for its heavy ink film and high color saturation. The application of spot varnish in gravure focuses on coat weight control and solvent release.
Cylinder Depth & Leveling:The electronic engraving depth of the gravure cylinder determines the varnish thickness. The varnish must possess excellent self-leveling capabilities to eliminate cell patterns and form a mirror-like, smooth coating.
Rub & Weather Resistance:Gravure products are often used for food packaging or personal care labels. Once cured, the varnish must form a robust molecular chain to pass 500+ cycle rub tests and resist UV degradation.
4.Core Technical Specifications
| Properties | Offset UV Adhesive | Gravure Spot Varnish |
| Viscosity | 40 - 60 Pa·s | 18-25s |
| Drying | UV / LED-UV Curing |
Solvent Evaporation UV Curing |
| Coating Weight | 1.5 - 2.5 g/m² | 4.0 - 8.0 g/m² |
| Scratch Resistance | Excellent | Superior |
5.Troubleshooting Industrial Faults
Registration Misalignment:In high-speed gravure, improper tension control leads to misalignment between varnish and base colors. Adjustment of oven temperature and rewinding tension is required.
Ink Picking:In offset, if the adhesive tack is too high, it can cause surface picking. Specialized additives should be used to adjust the thixotropic properties.
